The PM Vishwakarma Scheme (officially PM Vishwakarma — National Artisans and Craftspeople Empowerment Scheme) is a central sector scheme launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 17 September 2023. It targets India’s traditional artisans and craftspeople — the backbone of the country’s informal economy — with credit support, skill training, and digital inclusion. As of 2026, the scheme has already sanctioned loans worth over ₹5,260 crore to more than 7.95 lakh artisans across the country.
This guide covers everything you need to know: eligibility, benefits (loan amounts, interest subsidy, toolkit incentive), the 18 covered trades, documents required, and a step-by-step online application process for 2026.
India is home to crores of traditional artisans — carpenters, blacksmiths, potters, weavers, and dozens of other trades passed down through generations. Most work in the informal sector with little access to formal credit, training, or markets. The PM Vishwakarma Scheme was designed to change that.
The scheme provides end-to-end support to artisans and craftspeople across 18 traditional family-based trades. It is implemented for an initial period of five years, covering 2023-24 to 2027-28, with a total estimated outlay of ₹13,000 crore.
The scheme is implemented through Common Service Centres (CSCs), state governments, and the official PM Vishwakarma portal (pmvishwakarma.gov.in).
To register under the PM Vishwakarma Scheme, an applicant must meet the following conditions:
The scheme provides credit in two stages:
Both tranches are collateral-free. No property or asset needs to be pledged.
The concessional interest rate for PM Vishwakarma loans is fixed at 5% per annum. The government provides interest subvention to banks so that artisans pay only this reduced rate. For borrowers who make timely repayments, there is an additional 3% prompt repayment incentive, effectively bringing the interest cost down to approximately 2% p.a.
On the first loan disbursement, each registered artisan receives a ₹15,000 toolkit incentive. This amount is credited directly to the beneficiary’s bank account (linked to their Aadhaar) and can be used to purchase modern tools, equipment, or raw materials relevant to their trade.
Artisans who transact digitally (UPI, QR code-based payments) and maintain transaction records are eligible for a digital incentive of up to ₹1,200 per month. This encourages cashless transactions and helps build a credit history for artisans.
Registered artisans get access to trade fairs, exhibitions, and buyer-seller meets organized by the government. They are also onboarded onto online marketplaces to reach wider customer bases.
Registration under PM Vishwakarma can be done both online and through CSC centres. Here is the online process:
Go to pmvishwakarma.gov.in — the official website of the PM Vishwakarma Scheme.
On the homepage, look for the registration link (usually displayed prominently). You will be redirected to the registration form.
Enter your Aadhaar number for identity verification. After OTP-based authentication, fill in your personal details — name, date of birth, gender, mobile number, and address.
Choose the traditional trade you are engaged in from the list of 18 trades. You must select the trade you are actively practicing.
Upload the required documents (see the next section). The portal accepts images and PDF files.
Review all details and submit. After submission, you will receive an application reference number. Save this for future tracking.
Your application is verified by the concerned authority (typically at the block/district level). If approved, you receive the PM Vishwakarma Certificate and ID card. This ID card is your key to accessing all scheme benefits.
If you prefer in-person assistance, visit your nearest Common Service Centre (CSC) or CSC PM Vishwakarma page. The Village Level Entrepreneur (VLE) at the CSC will help you complete the registration online. Carry your original documents for verification.

The interest rate is 5% per annum. With the 3% prompt repayment incentive (for on-time EMI payments), the effective rate drops to about 2% per annum.
Yes, you can apply for a PM Vishwakarma loan even if you have an existing business loan, provided you meet the scheme’s eligibility criteria and are not availing benefits under a similar central scheme for the same trade.
The ₹15,000 toolkit incentive is transferred directly to the beneficiary’s bank account via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). You can use this amount to purchase tools of your choice relevant to your trade.
Online registration takes about 15–20 minutes. Verification at the block/district level typically takes 15–30 days. Once approved, the PM Vishwakarma ID card is issued.
The minimum age is 18 years. There is no upper age limit — senior artisans actively practicing their trade are eligible.
No. Only one member per family can register and avail benefits under the PM Vishwakarma Scheme. The family is defined as the household unit as per Aadhaar records.
The PM Vishwakarma Scheme is one of the most comprehensive government initiatives for India’s traditional artisans. With collateral-free loans up to ₹3 lakh, a 5% interest rate, a ₹15,000 toolkit incentive, and structured skill training, it provides a real pathway from subsistence-level craft work to a sustainable livelihood. If you are an artisan engaged in any of the 18 covered trades, registering under this scheme in 2026 is straightforward — visit pmvishwakarma.gov.in or your nearest CSC to get started.
